A Prayer journal is a personal spiritual journal in which we record our prayers, desires, struggles, and blessings. It serves as a tool for deepening our relationship with God. It has become an important way for many believers to keep their faith alive and active, and provides a space for personal growth and development. It is essentially a form of dialogue with God — you write down what is on your mind, what is on your mind, what you are grateful for and what you are praying for. Prayer journaling can include not only personal prayers, but also spiritual awareness, revelation from God, prophecy, Bible verses, or responses to scripture. It is often used as a way to keep track of your spiritual progress and how God is answering your prayers.
Why keep a prayer journal?
If you keep a prayer journal regularly, over a period of time you will see where your relationship with God has progressed, how God has answered your prayers, and how you have grown closer to God over that period. When you write, you can slow down and let your thoughts flow. Write down everything that comes to mind on the topic. For example, you can pray while you write. God may also answer you while you are writing your journal, so write that down as well.
What should a prayer journal contain?
Prayers: Prayers — spontaneous or inspired from the Bible — are the basis of every prayer journal. They may include petitions, praises or thanksgivings. It doesn’t always have to be a complex or formal text, but rather an expression of what is on your heart. Some people like to write down specific prayers for different areas of life and use them in the future, but I have had negative experiences with this. If I am repeating word for word a prayer that I have used in the past, I am not saying it from the heart, I am just repeating the words. So from my own experience I do not recommend this method.
Bible verses and inspiration: if you come across a passage that strikes you while reading the Bible, you can transcribe it in your journal and add a personal reflection. For example, how a particular verse spoke to you or helped you understand a situation you are going through.
Answers to prayers: writing down answers to prayers is a key part of a prayer journal. When you record what you prayed for and later note how God answered it, you can see how He is working in your life. This will help you through the hard times when you feel like your prayers aren’t exactly being answered, while continuing to be grateful to God for what ever He has done for you.
Spiritual reflection and growth: a prayer journal is also used to write down spiritual thoughts, experiences and lessons. You can keep a record of what is going on in your heart and how God is working in your life. This type of journal can include writing down dreams, miracles, or moments when you felt God’s presence.
Gratitude: in addition to requests and petitions, the prayer journal should include a list of things for which you are grateful. Keeping a “gratitude journal” is a great way to maintain a positive and humble attitude toward God. Each day you can write down what you are thankful for, whether it is the big events of life or the small joys of everyday life.
Prophecy and interpretation of tongues: do you pray in tongues and prophesy? Do you receive images or thoughts from God? Write everything down. The interpretation of tongues as well as prophecy is very encouraging and it would be a shame not to have it all written down.
Pictures: do you like to express your gratitude and requests to God with pictures? Take crayons, markers, pencils and whatever you have on hand and start creating.
Spiritual goals: do you want to devote more time to prayer, service, or anything else in your spiritual life? Write that down too and watch how it develops.
Christian events: if you go to Christian festivals or other events, it’s a good idea to write down what you experienced with God there, how He used you, and how He spoke to you.
Inspirational stories: have you been touched by any other people’s stories? Often these stories are evidence to us of what God is like and how He is likely to act in our lives in the future. But don’t forget to write down your stories too.
There are many things you can still write in your prayer journal, e.g. miracles and divine interventions, dreams from God, prayers for forgiveness, notes from worship services, list of spiritual books to read, Bible group notes, etc.
How to keep a prayer journal in foreign languages?
Keeping a prayer journal in a foreign language can not only be spiritually beneficial, but also a great way to improve your language skills. If you are studying a language, you can write your prayers and reflections in that language. This process will help you learn new expressions while giving you space to develop your spiritual life.
Prayers in a foreign language: start with prayers in simple sentences and add more difficult sentences and phrases as you progress in your language study.
Bible verses: if you keep a prayer journal in a foreign language, you can also read the Bible in that language. For example, each day choose one Bible verse in a foreign language and record it in your prayer journal along with a reflection in that language. If you are a keen linguist, you can also compare each translation with the original. Today, portals like biblehub.com are available where you can find a concordance in the original languages. I can tell you from experience that sometimes you can find really interesting things. 🙂
Learn new phrases and vocabulary: the prayer journal will also help you expand your vocabulary with spiritual expressions that you may not often use in everyday conversation, but if you are interested in Bible verses, you will certainly find them there. Jot down new expressions you discover as you write prayers or read the Bible, and learn to use them in your own context.
Read Christian books: God speaks through other books, so you can write down both what God reveals to you and the overall content of the book. I can now specifically recommend to you the English manual “Living in the midst of prophecy”, from which I learned to interpret tongues and prophesy. It leads into practice, which is the best for discipleship. 🙂
Tracking your progress in a foreign language: just as you track the answers to your prayers, you can also track your progress in a foreign language. By looking back at your records, you will realize how much you have improved in your use of the language.
I bless you to be sensitive to God’s voice and to write down all the ways in which God leads you.
Have a wonderful time! 🙂
